KACP President Stacy Sparks welcomed members in attendance and called the meeting to order.
KACP 1st vice president (contest) Gerard Attoun gave a presentation about the Oklahoma Collegiate Press Association contest that was judged by members of the KACP. The contest went well and the OCPA had already sent $700 to the KACP for its work and it had been forwarded to Dave Bostwick, KACP treasurer, he said.
Attoun also reported on the 2007 KACP contest; his report included facts such as there were 2,025 individual entries, from 22 schools; and 32 overall entries. The copy editing contest had 29 entries, with 23 from 4-year and six from two-year schools.
2nd Vice President Kevin Page reported on the 2007 KACP Conference and on the upcoming Fall 2007 adviser’s retreat to be held Sept. 28-29 at the Hotel of Old Town, Wichita.
Attendance at the 2007 KACP Conference was impressive, with 193 students, a 17% increase over the 2006 attendance of 163 students. Advisers’ attendance was down by 7%, with 26 in 2007, compared to 28 in 2006, he said. Page offered thanks to all of the KACP members who helped secure speakers for the 2007 conference. The 2008 KACP Conference will be April 6-7, 2008, at the Hotel at Oldtown, in Wichita, with a conference registration deadline of March 28, 2008, Page said.
KACP Treasurer Dave Bostwick gave the treasurer’s report, after noting that he would be making a professional move, from Cowley County CC to a teaching position at Baker University, beginning in Fall 2007. Bostwick reported an April 13, 2007, balance of $14,115 in the KACP treasury, and gave handout sheets listing the income and outgoing payments from the account, since Sept. 21, 2007.
Anne Christiansen-Bullers, coordinator of the Jackie Engel Award, gave a report, noting that the new winner was C. Dowd Tate, an adviser from Shawnee Mission. Tate, while appreciative of the award, was unable to come to the 2007 conference because he was in the middle of a yearbook deadline, Christiansen-Bullers said.
Stacy Sparks opened a discussion on the upcoming Fall 2007 retreat at Oldtown. Kevin Page, for the benefit of new advisers, explained that the retreat was a time for the advisers to get together and discuss the contest and make any needed changes, as well as planning the next conference. Kara Cunningham asked if there would be a student editors’ workshop at the Fall 2007 retreat, noting that there had been “great feedback” from editors who had attended prior workshops. Kevin Page said his students got a lot out of the workshops. The consensus was that the student editors’ workshop should occur again at the next Fall Retreat.
Stacy Sparks added, for the new advisers, that the retreat was a productive experience for everyone, as well providing an opportunity to socialize. A lot of the advisers come in on Friday evening, for the socializing opportunity, while others arrive Saturday morning for the planning and brainstorming sessions, she said.
Laura York, of Garden City CC, said the CMA would have two really valuable summer workshops in June and details could be found on the CMA website. The workshops deal with First Amendment rights, at Vanderbilt University, Nashville, and with the role of new advisers, in a CMA event in Louisville, Ky.
The KACP membership noted the upcoming retirement of Janet Hallford, who has served in many official capacities in KACP for 19 years, and thanked her for her loyal, tireless and valuable service to the organization. There also was more discussion about Dave Bostwick’s move from Cowley County CC to Baker University. The move would not interfere with his KACP participation, Bostwick said.
Stacy Sparks moved to adjourn the meeting. It was seconded. The meeting was adjourned.
